Overview

VEX V5 is the senior end of the VEX platform: metal structure, V5 smart motors and the V5 brain, aimed at senior secondary and tertiary engineering projects and the VEX Robotics Competition (VRC). Unlike the snap-together IQ parts, V5 is assembled with screws and tools, and what you get in return is rigidity that survives competition contact plus considerably more torque.

Programming uses VEXcode V5 with blocks, Python and C++. When students reach PID control, sensor fusion or autonomous routines, they stay in the same environment rather than switching platforms for the advanced material. The brain's screen shows live sensor values and debug output, which saves a lot of time tuning a robot at the field.

VRC changes its game each year while V5 hardware carries across seasons. For a school already teaching VEX IQ, V5 is the natural senior-secondary continuation.

Frequently asked questions

Should we choose V5 or VEX IQ?

It depends on year group and course goals. Primary to junior secondary, short lessons and tool-free building point to VEX IQ. Senior secondary and above, structural strength, control theory or VRC entry point to V5. The programming concepts carry over, so pupils moving from IQ to V5 are not starting again.

What else is needed to enter VRC?

Beyond the robot hardware you normally need the season's field elements and perimeter, plus any accessories the season's rules require. Tell us your division and we will list the season's requirements and lead times.
